Main Blog Post 1 - Research
Since deciding on Charcoal Burning as our Endangered Craft, I have been researching what I could contribute towards my group that would make a difference. As we are a group of nine, it would be very easy to simply disperse into the background, however I would like to have a large contribution to this, making my stamp on the project. Most of our group are either 3DD student, Textiles students, or other practical art based courses. They are mainly focused on creating physical objects to be placed in the exhibition. Whilst this interests me, I am not planning on creating a physical object. This is because I feel my efforts are best placed in my main subject of filmmaking. I have mentioned my ideas with the rest of the group and they are excited by my ideas as they differ from the rest of the group.
As there are three filmmakers in the group, I've decided to go down a different route for one project that is other than a visual piece to be projected either onto a wall or played on a screen. I've made the decision to go down two paths; one using sound to represent charcoal, and one other visual piece to represent charcoal in daily life.
For the sound piece, I have been recording our group conversations, from bonding conversations to plans for our individual projects within the group. Once I've finished collecting the recordings (I intend to do a vast quantity for layering purposes), I intend to record the sound of the charcoal burning process. This will include the sounds of the charcoal being created, from sawing the wood, to throwing it into the pit. I am also going to record sounds from the finished charcoal product. This will include scratching the charcoal, breaking it, cracking and smashing it. Any way that I can make a sound using the products, I will be recording.
Once I have fully recorded all of my sounds, I will be layering them as if to tell a story of the process of the full Unit X Project. This will hopefully be on a constant loop in the exhibition, giving it more of an interactive experience, rather than simply looking at what we have done. Alongside the moving image project, the products my teammates have made, and the smell of the charcoal, I'm confident this experience will be much more enticing than a standard exhibition.
I will also be filming a project alongside one of my group members, Laura. Laura approached me with a film idea revolving around the uses of charcoal in the everyday 'getting ready' routine. We are planning on filming this soon, which I will Co-Direct, edit, shoot and set up.
I feel inspired by how we use charcoal and have accepted charcoal into our daily lives. Many use it in association with their beauty regimes, like using face masks, hair masks, etc. It has also been integrated into toothpaste and drinks. I find this to be a very interesting feature of charcoal, and I would like to shed light onto this in some way. This will be completed through Laura and I's project.
