Main Blog Post 3 - Reflection

In reflection, this has been a very insightful project.
I have learned several new things, the most obvious to include my knowledge of charcoal. I now know how to create charcoal, how charcoal is incorporated into our daily lives in so many aspects, and how charcoal can actually have positive outcomes, despite the controversial traditional method of creating it.

I have also learned of the excitement that comes with teamwork where the team isn't entirely made up of filmmakers. Working with two filmmakers and seven other art students was new territory for me, however I thoroughly enjoyed getting to hear their opinions on the film and sound, as they didn't have the same insight as myself. I also enjoyed getting to learn their crafts, as that was completely new for me.

I also learned the importance of listening to your team. I would like to think that I listened very well to my team, and that I delivered on every task. Laura approached me wit her filmmaking ideas, and after one full day of working, I had a finished product for her, from start to finish.
Another example of my strong delivery would be where we had a tutorial with the tutors, and one mentioned the idea of incorporating conversation into the sound piece. I immediately went off and recorded several conversations, all later to be included in the sound piece, as suggested.

Our Manifesto in our book, which I feel I strongly maintained throughout all aspects of the project.

I am happy with how the exhibition came out for the most part. We were able to have our films projected onto the main wall of the exhibition, which was very exciting to see. As I have not had my work shown in an art exhibition before, I feel this was an aspect I could have improved upon. This was because the speakers weren't set up in places where they could be heard, and so the sound piece wasn't really heard in the exhibition unfortunately. However, I am still very happy with how the visual piece turned out. I received a fair few comments about it, having it described as "captivating" by two visitors to the exhibition.

In hindsight, I would have changed a few aspects of the process, however overall I am very happy with the outcome of it overall.
For one, I wish that the sound could have been heard during the exhibition. I spent a vast amount of time, and has a lot of thought go into the piece.  I thought it was being sorted by the other filmmakers, however perhaps I should have insisted on doing it myself in order to be sure that the sound piece would have been heard.

However, in hindsight I do feel that I did very well in the project. I enjoyed getting to know more members of the Art School, from courses that I never imagined I would be involved in, such as Textiles. I enjoyed getting to know their crafts, and getting to see my work in a traditional exhibition. Being a filmmaker, I have not had my work shown in this sort of environment, and so I found it wonderful to be in this environment and also have my work be part of it.

(right) My summary of the sound piece.

Overall, I don't think I would change anything about the whole process from start to finish, other than the sound presentation at the exhibition. I enjoyed the projects that I worked on with Laura and the rest of the group. I have made contacts with my group, and if ever I was in need of help from their field, I would be keen to ask for their assistance.

I enjoyed being thrown new and exciting challenges. I had not edited in that style before, however now I am excited to have another opportunity to do that style again. It has left me considering engaging in this form of filmmaking in the future, especially if it means being involved with likeminded artists. I have enjoyed selecting a project that was out of my comfort zone, as it has given me the inspiration to perhaps aspire for a different career of filmmaking in the future.
